How Hip-Hop Teaches Nonviolence

As the anniversary of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. approaches, I cannot help but thank God for my parents. Long before it was a legal holiday, my parents took me out of school on his birthday. My mom and dad were strategic in their rebellion against the American school system.

That was how they honored his life, before the nation had the sense to do the same. We did not BBQ. I did not sleep in on Dr. King’s birthday. I read about Black history, my duty to learn from it and seek better for our people. I was taught to celebrate his life by respecting all life. I never met another kid who had parents that took such an approach to Dr. Kings birthday. I realize now that my parents were nonviolent revolutionaries. Today, with my own children I am working to pick up the torch they gave me in my youth. Hip-Hop music, has helped keep me stay in tune with the mission of Dr. King along the way.

Despite passing long before the seeds of Hip-Hop had began to bloom, rap music itself is an act nonviolence. Many might immediately take offense to this or laugh. However if you look at even some of the most violent rap you can think of, it is still just a song. Any rapper who rhymes about killing, could have picked up a gun. Instead they chose to pick up a pen. I’m not defending the content of murderous rap. What I am saying is that they chose to write an angry poem, instead of using their felling to commit a violent act. That’s choosing nonviolence!

Dr. King spoke directly to the importance of education. In the era of Hip-Hop’s “Golden Age” knowledge was a duty for most rappers. Public Enemy, Rakim, Ice Cube and many others laid a clear foundation for promoting nonviolence in Hip-Hop.

Songs like Ice-T’s The Hunted Child , Ice Cube’s Colorblind illustrated in graphic detail about the consequence of violence on the streets. While embraced as a classics within the Hip-Hop community, mainstream media hardly acknowledge its existence. Even today rappers like Game and Nas will make songs in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and it gets almost no recognition by Black or White media outlets. So, they must be doing it for more than the money? They get zero reward for speaking about peace, and only hit the charts when they sing of murdering their own. We should applaud their courage and accept their sincerity.

In recent years songs like I Know I Can by Nas, Sabac Red’s The Commitment and T-KASH’s Peace To My Enemies motivate feet and minds to live better.

Dr. King took the power of God’s love to the streets. Hip-Hop music comes from the streets. This means that it will not always say things that are fun or easy to digest. But it will always be honest. Songs like Sticky Fingaz Oh My God, Kanye West’s Jesus Walks and Rakim’s Who Is God? are brilliant illustrations of some of the spiritual aspirations circulating within the Hip-Hop community. The RZA from Wu-Tang Clan made an amazing song about love for The Creator called Sunshine on the album 8 Diagrams. Rapper Killer Mike wrote amazing verses about spiritual redemption with God In The Building. Many of these songs may not be in the Top 4o. But they keep the people on the streets motivated to embrace God. I don’t believe Dr. King would want it any other way. Let us remember he died on the way to protect the rights of sanitation workers in Memphis.

While many have taken on Dr. King’s mission of nonviolence, his crusade against poverty has been largely ignored. Poverty knows no color. The empty stomach of a child in Oakland does not hurt any less than the stomach of a child in Chechnya. A Mexican mother without food, worries no less than a White mom in Minnesota. Until I worked at a high school in San Francisco, I had not true understanding of poverty. This opened my eyes to the wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr., almost more than anything else.

I have learned that starving student cannot study. I have seen “underground railroads” of food emerge in response. Many teachers argue against kids attitudes in class. Others see food in the classroom a nuisance. I understand how frustrating it can be for a dedicated teacher to endure it. Kids appear to be disruptive in class, but they can’t hear the math lesson over the rumble in their stomach. I’ve watched kids walk down hallways in shoes with soles that literally are about to peel off the bottom of their foot and be mocked by others. I’ve seen kids walk around in clothes they’ve outgrown due to a growth spurt. So their growth is a silent curse as their parents cannot afford new clothes. I’m not talking only about just Black children. I see this as global burden. Poverty is an oppressive demon and in many cases is the root of why violence happens and why we (humans) excuse it many times. One might be able to argue that the bulk of the violence in Hip-Hop is in direct proportion to the initial state of poverty its performers existed in.

The impact of poverty on the heart and mind can be seen in the music of artists like Apathy’s Check to Check, or Vinnie Paz’s Keep Movin ‘ On . They leave deep impressions about the reality of poverty. In an Occupy Wall St. era, their lyrics sting with searing precision. In his time, Dr. King’s words had the same effect.

I love Jazz, Blues and Rock. I love Gospel and all other forms of Black music from the African diaspora. But nothing has pushed nonviolence as consistently and as bold as rap music. It is a fact we cannot deny. This fact does not undo much of the violence and sexism and celebration of materialism in Hip-Hop. Yet it was Bid Daddy Kane, Biz Markie and Kool G Rap that reminded me to Erase Racism. What the subculture of Hip-Hop has achieved, I will not allow to be denied. I thank Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his sacrifice every time I hear a rapper embrace peace. Happy birthday Dr. King. Those love Hip-Hop continue to keep your message alive.

How Martial Arts Teach Nonviolence

American’s have been fascinated by martial arts since the mid 1970′s to 1980′s. A Chinese man from San Francisco, California name Lee Jun-fan would change the entire planet with his films. We came to know him by the name Bruce Lee.

Movies like The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon altered the U.S. film industry and the minds of American people forever. His movies brought a new idea to what it meant to fight, and what it meant to be a fighter. Bruce Lee spoke differently, he talked of the importance of self knowledge, and fearless free expression.

These were not things American folks usually accepted with the idea of combat.
Around the same time, the Shaw Brothers began to make their own films like 36 Chambers of Shaolin, Five Deadly Venoms and One-Armed Swordsmen hypnotized the American masses. They instilled a new the idea of what violence, honor, respect, discipline, humility and human character meant.
This fascination with martial arts culture took an even bigger turn when the TV Show Kung-Fu aired. It was not the best TV show ever made. There were many racist undertones in the show from time to time. However, some of the conversations between the original Master Po and his students.

Additionally, these films and TV shows introduced a new idea of how to practice nonviolence to Americans from all walks of life. These films had an affect music as well. Rap music from artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Dilated Peoples, Andre Nickatina, Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys, One Be Lo and many others have paid much homage to the impact of the movies and the philosophies learned from them.
The work of Bruce Lee, The Shaw Brothers, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and other films of the time helped teach Whites and Blacks alike the power of peace. To seek peace not just outside ourselves, but more importantly the one we all seek inside ourselves.

Unfortunately the biggest mistake we make in the West is to think that someone who loves to study boxing, kung-fu, wrestling or jiu-jitsu loves to fight. We think somewhere internally they enjoy hurting other people.
Now take a look at Buddhist monks. They are known globally as one of the most peaceful people on the planet. But they are also known for having a long tradition of cultivating self defense techniques.It is precisely because they have extensive knowledge of how to break bones and choke people, that they choose not to.
Let me be clear. When someone lashes out at a woman and swings wildly at her, it is proof that they’ve lost emotional control.

That act is completely different from the woman being swung on to tactically evade the fist coming at her. If she decides it is necessary to isolate her attackers arm, and break it so she can be safe- that is nonviolence. She has created no violence in a space where violence was prevalent. Buddhism teaches nonviolence without question. Still Buddhists were taught that to observe injustice going on and do nothing made one worse than “devils.”

Martial arts films are the only movies in existence that consistently show women of clear mind and action fully capable of defending themselves. In America we look at women who can fight as “manly” and unattractive. Martial arts encourage women to learn self defense to cultivate and preserve their beauty and spirit. At the same time, we learn that violence is never to be taken lightly. That seemingly casually aggressive situations can turn deadly fast.

The roots of what motivated the attacker and the response from the woman who was attacked came from two different places. The attack came from rage or a desire for power. The response the woman gave was rooted in self preservation and a desire for peace. Jet Li was recently explaining the meaning of martial arts to CulturePulp :

In Chinese writing, wushu comes from two words: one is “stop” and one is “war.” “Stop-war.” In most action films, people focus on the “war.” Fighting, fighting, fighting. Violence against violence. Nobody talks about the “stop.” [laughs]

Today MMA (mixed martial arts) is taking over the world. The sport proves humanity has evolved to a place where martial artists can test their skills safely and make a great living a it. It is also important to acknowledge that many of the fighters you see in the UFC and Strikeforce almost never get caught up with the law. They are often far too focused on their physical and mental well being to run the streets trying to hurt people for the sake of their ego.

Now we see bullying as a long ignored social epidemic. We see crimes against women and young girls as a global cancer. Our children are also horribly out of shape. Teen obesity and disease from poor health are common among our kids. It is not the parents, educators or politicians who are helping America solve this issue. It is a family of martial artists, named the Gracie’s. Two brothers, Rener and Ryron Gracie, created Bullyproof and Women Empowered for children and adult women in need of realistic ways to protect themselves. Their cousin Kyra Gracie is respected around the world for her accomplishments. Beyond the self defense techniques, the students are taught about the psychology of an attacker so they can used “verbal jiu jitsu” to evade a confrontation altogether.

Today we see many of today blockbuster movies for kids like Kung Fu Panda and Jaden Smith’s Karate Kid introducing young people to the ideas of self discipline, inner peace and learning the power of not fighting. In these ways, the martial arts fused with film and music have helped preserve the legacy of nonviolence laid down in America by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 4th 2012- San Jose, CA - The Hip-Hop Chess Federation (HHCF) is proud to announce it will be hosting its 5 year anniversary youth chess tournament February 11th, 2012 at the Alum Rock Youth Center in San Jose, CA. Entitled V-DAY, the event is to honor thier five year anniversary, as well focus on life strategy themes like, Victory. HHCF founder Adisa Banjoko stated "A lot of people have no idea what a gifted, competitive chess community we have in the Bay Area. It's a perfect storm of good organizations, great kids and dedicated coaches, many of whom have been crucial to the HHCF's growth," Banjoko continues "Expect V-Day to be a powerful fusion of chess gaming, jiu jitsu exhibitions and epic panel discussion. HHCF Interview With Erik "Weaksquare" Murrah

I met Erik aka @WeakSquare on Twitter. We became cool and I wanted to share more of his thoughts and his art with you. Check him out. Certainly a man investing a lot of positive energy in the youth.

HHCF: How did you get started in chess?

WeakSquare: My father taught me the moves when I was about 9 or 10. I used to play my chess program on the computer or battle chess at the school library. I always thought the game was beautiful but never really took it seriously until later in life.

HHCF: When did you decide to compete and tell me about some of the things you have learned from competition?

WS: That is actually kind of an interesting story. In 2003 I became addicted to online poker. In 2005 I had destroyed all trust between me and my wife because of my addiction. My wife and I met with our pastor who pointed out to me that my addiction was not with money, it was with competition. He recommended that I focus my competitive energy on something far less destructive.

I started playing chess online and it was exactly what I needed. I never picked gambling back up once I started playing chess. I think that’s why I have picked up chess so quickly, whenever I decide to do something I pour myself into it completely. I have a ferocious tenacity for winning and I think that’s an essential ingredient for becoming a good chess player. I started competing in tournaments in 2007 after I found out my hometown had a chess club. In 2009, I became the South Carolina Amateur Co-Champion by scoring 4 points out of 5 in our state championship chess tournament.

It’s kind of interesting to me that chess, which has given me so much life and energy, was born out of a crisis. I firmly believe that our mistakes never define us as people, how we choose to recover from our mistakes is what makes people great. When I was at the lowest point of my life in 2005, I always kept a positive attitude that I could make things right. I worked harder at restoring my marriage than anything else and it has paid enormous dividends. Next year my wife and I will be celebrating our 10-year anniversary.

I have learned so much from playing chess, mainly because I have lost a lot of games. I have a theory that investing in your losses, whether it’s chess, business, football, or whatever, teaches you the most about your discipline. Losing is not a tragedy, failing to learn the lesson that comes along with the loss is the real tragedy.

So yes, I have learned so much about chess, life, competition, winning, and losing by playing.

HHCF: You have made some really cool videos on chess. I especially like the ones on Capablanca. Do you plan to keep making more?

WS: Hey thanks! I have done numerous videos on YouTube. Actually I started making the videos for my own benefit. I started pouring through the best of Capablanca’s Endgames and found the games so fascinating I thought it would be kind of tragic to review a game, move on and forget it. So I started making the videos so I could review the games at a later time.

I also started making a video series on the Hyper Accelerated Dragon which is my defense versus 1.e4. That series has gotten a very nice response from the folks on YouTube. Honestly I don’t have as much time to do videos as I would like. With kids and studying for games, artwork, my job, and such, the time it takes to create a video is a huge investment. I hope to do more in the future.

HHCF: You were recently featured on TV for some of your outreach with kids. Tell me about that program?

WS: I work in law enforcement. Our county sheriff focuses a lot on community involvement. He challenges all of his employees to be heavily involved in the community. As a response to his challenge, I approached a local elementary school about coaching some at-risk children. They were very receptive so I have about 14 boys that I meet with once a week to teach them the game.

They all love it. I told them on day one that chess is about commanding an army, they ate that up. I also told them about Magnus Carlsen who is the strongest chess player in the world at only 21 years old. When they figured out that they could be better at something than grown-ups they really took a firm interest in learning the art.

HHCF: Your blog is a very fun resource for chess and art. I especially love your wallpapers. How did you get involved in graphic design?

WS: Thanks so much! I’m really proud of my blog. Art has always been a big part of my life, I have always been able to draw really well. When I got into college that was about the time Photoshop started becoming a very popular business tool. I got really good at it and now am Photoshop expert. Being in public relations requires me to write a lot of news stories and also create a lot of promotional materials for community events through the Sheriff’s Department. So the professional skills that I have learned translate perfectly to running a blog about my favorite hobby.

As a side project, I also have a web comic called “The Unexamined Life” which melds philosophy and nerd humor. And make no mistake, I am a nerd. People have a hard time believing I am a nerd on the surface because I played high school basketball and have competed in triathlons. Usually when I tell them I can play chess blindfolded, that removes all doubt to my nerd claim.

HHCF: Whats next for the Weak Square? Wait! How did you come up with that name?

WS: What’s next? Who knows? I love being creative but I got to tell you man, creative people generally have no rudder. We kind of go where the creative winds push us. I had the idea for this web comic and then pushed out three issues within a few weeks, I mean fast.

Honestly where I go from here is kind of whichever idea takes off. People have given me a lot of positive feedback about my blog, my YouTube videos and my artwork so at the moment I’m pursuing all three actively. Oh and of course, I still have competitive chess.

Regarding my moniker, it was really important I come up with something creative and funny, but also self-deprecating. I think poking fun at yourself keeps you honest and humble but it’s also a great form of humor. So, I came up with “Weak Square” which of course is a chess term for a square in your camp that cannot be defended by a pawn. But it’s also a double entendre because “square” is also a slang word for someone who is kind of lame. So by calling myself a “weak square” is clever but poking fun at myself at the same time as kicking out some chess lingo for folks in the know.

HHCF: Any final thoughts?

Yes, I have a real heart for children and I really respect and love your organization for what you guys are doing. This may sound cliche’ but children are the future of humanity. We have to invest in them if we are to overcome things like racism, sexism, class warfare, etc. All of the things I do is with the hope of inspiring imagination in someone. That being said, all of the energy and effort I put into my hobbies come a distant second to the important things in life like my relationship with Jesus Christ and my wife and children.

I am an extremely busy person, so making quality time for children and family is something that is easy to let slide, but it really is the most important thing that I can do. So instead of letting chess stand in the way of my family I include them. I bought my little girl a pink chess set and we just set up the pieces and knock them down and she thinks it’s the greatest thing in the world because it’s spending fun time with daddy.

So I wanted to say all this stuff I do is a drop in the bucket to being a good husband and father.

I met BJ Penn a long time ago. We were both new at Ralph Gracies. What I remember the most about him was his flexibility, his unmatched dedication to Jiu Jitsu and his courage. Deep courage. You all see it in the cage now, but, to see it then....Was almost even more amazing. He lived a few blocks away from me. After a while his older brother JD Penn would invite me to go to Alex Oxendines place....It was Alex's garage in San Jose...It was dubbed "Legends" and if you were in that garage you worked hard...Fast forward to 2011 and the world knows his name and he is an inspiration to people around the world. I saw BJ Penn for the first time in a long time....Thanks to Dr. Peter Goldman (he reconnected us). It was great to see him and Hoyt and Danny "Donothing" at Skyline College. The Head Coach of Skyline Wrestling team held a private grappling session. I got notice late and I walked in the cold on an empty stomach to roll. It was great. Nothing in the world like reconnecting with old friends. If you have never read his book Why I Fight, I suggest you get it for yourself, then give it to someone you love. -Adisa Banjoko

I dedicate this song to my cousin Ben, may he rest in peace. He died at 19...so young. But before he died, while we sat in a car front of my home during the Holiday season we talked about Nigeria. He had just returned from Lagos. Him and his brother started talking about Fela Kuti. They both see I'm lost in the conversation. He asked me if I heard of Fela? I said I had not. He said, "If you like Bob Marley, you will LOVE Fela". Ben was right. He died four months later. I did not hear Fela until after he passed. I never hear a note from Fela and forget my cousin. That was ten years ago. I miss you Ben...I love you.

For the last few weeks I've been haunted by a cloud (that I might have cancer). I had to get some tests over the last few days. Today I was informed that I am cancer FREE. But, I will need to get some other, very minor procedures done (compared to having cancer) in the near future. I just wanna say that I have gained some serious clarity on who I am, what I love and who I care about....Also, more importantly, what I have not done and need to accomplish. Another example of political rap and chess from the late 80's and early 90's is with rapper Professor Griff. He started out as the head of the security team for Public Enemy. After things got hectic between him and Chuck D, Griff dropped some records of his own. Many years later they reunited. His record Pawns in the Game was one of the most consistent in showing how rappers used chess as a metaphor to explain the importance of planning and strategy in ones life.

Description of chess quads:

When HHCF player Dyhemia Young was in TX to play for her chess scholarship, she was lucky enough to find true friends in a young girl named Diamond and her father Abdul Shakoor. He helped to coach her technically and emotionally through the tournament. He and I have talked a lot since then and I wanted to share a recent interview I did with him about chess, life, fatherhood, positivity and power of always pursuing your goals. He also runs an organization called Urban Kings & Queens. They do good things for the community. Check out our conversation below.

HHCF: When did you start playing chess and who taught you?

I started playing Chess when I was 25 years old in Atlanta while working with the 1996 Olympics and the music and entertainment industry as CEO of Tillery Enterprises (promotions and marketing). I am from Brooklyn, New York and I was reared in Kent, Ohio in foster care from 12 yrs old until 18yrs old. I am self taught and learning more everyday!

HHCF: What were some of the things chess taught you about life?

Chess has taught me that for every decision and choice; there are consequences so choose wisely. The game of Chess has taught me to relax, relate, and release the problems and situtations that may occur frequently or in everyday life. Life is what you make it ! And you always have a chance to win! Never give up and stay calm.

HHCF: When did you start teaching your daughter chess and why was it important for you to do that?

I have taught Chess to over 500 students across that USA. I am a single father with a beautiful and humble 10 yr. old daughter; Diamond Shakoor. I started teaching my daughter how to play the game of chess at 7 years old. She was interested in playing and I told her to do good in school and you can play chess. Chess has been a true blessing for our family. It has brought my daughter and I closer together; and it opened the door for better communication between us, about life issues. We travel around the country and she gets to establish healthly long lasting friendships and contacts. Chess helps young people to battle "Emotional Displacement"; don't get mad get focused! Because a mad person can not think critically in tough situations.

HHCF: What would you say learning chess has done for her?

Learning chess has improved Diamond's confidence and presentation skills and it is preparing her for life and real world issues! She loves being herself and the hard work, sweat, and tears; are now tears of joy! It has been a process and not always easy! Every parent should introduce their child or children to the game of chess!

HHCF: Tell me about your time mentoring Dyhemia Young in TX at the Susan Polgar tournament and what were your impressions of Dyhemia on and off the board?

I enjoyed the opportunity to meet Dyhemia Young in Lubbock, TX at the 2011 Susan Polgar Girls Chess Invitational. When I first met Dyhemia she was listening to her music (tuning out this new chess world of course) and then I saw her in the cafeteria and asked her how to pronounce her name; because I did not want to start off by not knowing how to correctly say her name; and afterwards I introduced her to my daughter Diamond! Which was the goal in the first place was to hopefully have Dyhemia, Diamond and Vanita to meet and network; since they were the only 3 African American Females competing in a field of 46 Players. Dyhemia and Vanita were wonderful role models to my daughter-Thank You! It is hard for a man to teach his daughter everything about being a young lady; so sometimes you have to fall back and play your position. On the chess board Dyhemia has great potential if given the proper training (quality time )and tournament opportunities with her busy schedule of being a teenager.

HHCF: After the tournament, have you been in contact with her?

After the tournanment I have spoken to Dyhemia a few times and frequently by text to tell her to stay focused and keeping enjoying every moment of every day! I speak to her about life issues; the chess knowledge will come. She is playing chess everyday; when she strives to do better today than yesterday!

HHCF: Since the TX tournament whats next for you?

Next for The Shakoor Famiily (Diamond and Dad) is to enjoy the school year and attempt to secure corporate or individual sponsorship for Diamond Shakoor to attend Chess tournaments around the country and internationally. She is the chess worlds version of "Venus and Serena Williams".

HHCF: Will Diamond be competing soon?

Diamond's next major tournament is the Girls World Open in Chicago! October 7-10, 2011. And K-12 Nationals in Dallas, TX in November.

HHCF: What is your training method like for Diamond? How often do you practice with her? Are there any books or computer programs you might recommend?

My training methods for Diamond are simple; rest, good foods, practice problems and tactics, playing in a lot of tournaments!, taking notes from other parents and changing the formula to what works best for Diamond! She plays a lot of adults! And I tell her "You play the board not the opponent!" Diamond practices a little every day at least 30 minutes or she takes on all comers after beating up on Dad! Computers and programs are wonderful aids if you can afford them; otherwise hard work still pays off!

HHCF: Tell me about Urban Kings and Queens? What is your core philosophy?

Urban Kings and Queens Chess Academy - "Although you are in an Urban environment or regardless of your environment always know that you are all Kings and Queens and conduct yourself as such at all times!" The Academy is my pathway to help the youth with life skills and share some of the blessings with other young people to make it through life with the proper tools to succeed!!!

HHCF: Any last thoughts?

Enjoying Life, glad to have finally met HHCF! Looking forward to seeing all youth reach their goals and achieve their dreams!

Chuck D from Public Enemy and Adisa Banjoko Hit The 64 Squares!

In the late 80's there was a huge African-American play called The Meeting. It was about a mythical secret meeting between Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At one point in the play, they play two games of chess. This sit down, was like that meeting. For the record, I met Chuck D the summer- 89 was the number. Sound of the funky drummer was all over the streets. The other night, I took my son to his first rap show. It had to be Public Enemy. My son met Chuck D after the show. Chuck shouted me out from the stage telling the crowd he knew when he came to The Bay Area, he was with family. It was touching. The day after, we talked business and sat at the boards for a bit before he was off to LA. Much respect to Chuck. I want to thank him for opening my eyes and my spirit to the positive impact Hip-Hop could have on the planet.

HHCF Student Profile: Raheem Payton, Graduate John O’Connell High School 2011

When Raheem Payton first met HHCF founder Adisa Banjoko, he weighed more than 265 lbs. After telling Adisa that he wanted to be in MMA and Jiu Jitsu, Adisa gave him a diet plan and a workout regimen. In less than a year Raheem returned to school at 190 lbs and Adisa became his jiu jitsu instructor on the condition that Raheem choose non-violence as a way of life. Raheem kept his word . Beyond that, Adisa made sure that Raheem kept school in focus above all else. Here is an interview on one of the HHCF ‘s shining stars.

HHCF: When did you first learn about Hip-Hop Chess Federation?

Raheem Payton : I first learned about HHCF in 2008 while attending John O’Connell H.S.

HHCF: What kind of things did Adisa Banjoko do to help you learn more about chess, martial arts, or life?

RP: Adisa has helped me with all three. The chess aspect, I was taught the basic movements and how to think before I act. With martial arts I gained a great deal of discipline and self-control along with physical health benefits. In life Adisa has been not just a great mentor but a great friend. He has helped me learn to take steps in life which is making me become a better person.

HHCF: Are there any particular stories you remember from your time working with him or watching him work with other students?

RP : There’s really too many to count. It seemed like every day I was coming to Adisa for advice on how to deal with my life issues. But one in particular I really remember was when I would be going through rough patches with my parents he would share his stories about how he dealt with similar situations and reassured me that everything would work itself out in time and to be completely honest it did.

HHCF: What do you think you will remember most about working with HHCF?

RP : What I really enjoy is the reality that comes with HHCF. Everything that people read about is real people and everyday struggles in life with positive ways to cope.

HHCF: How important was it to Adisa that you graduated?

RP: I can really answer that question with one word dedication. If I had to think of anyone who was going to get on me about graduation it would be Adisa. He was always the person who made sure I was going to be successful.

HHCF: If a kid asked you why they should word with Adisa Banjoko and the Hip-Hop Chess Federation what would you tell them?

RP: Adisa has so much knowledge to share and I believe not only children can learn from him I know many adults that need to be where he is as a leader. He doesn’t sugar coat anything, you can really hear the truth in his words.

HHCF: Any last words?

RP: Adisa Banjoko is not only a close friend of mine he’s a father figure to me. I learn from him and I know a lot of people feel the same way. I was very lucky to come across someone that has pushed me time and time again to always push for my dreams.

Life Strategies Summer Series # 4: Find The Roots of Your Anger and Yank it Up

Of all the emotions on earth, the one most humans seem to most freely express is anger. This is a very dangerous emotion. Mostly, because it leads to the bulk of violence around the planet. When I say violence I don't mean just military conflicts. I mean brothers hitting sisters. I mean sisters hitting sisters (and bothers). I mean parents punching and slapping children. I mean kids pulling out guns on the playground. Its all a branch expression of anger. One second of unfocused anger has landed millions of people untold years in prison and even more in execution chambers. Don't let the next person you know be YOU!

But what are the root of anger?

For some, its fear. If people are bullied long enough, and endure in silence they can lash out violently with zero notice. Most people say that person went "over the edge". But the truth is, that long periods of humiliation almost always result in an angry outburst at some point. Some fear those of different racial, religious groups or genders. They attack those people falsely believing that they are really doing some good. Its never good.

Yet anger can be displayed with a level of dignity (meaning the person defends themselves from the bully by getting an adult or discovers their self worth and defends themselves). Or, it can become a twisted mass of pain an evolve into things like Columbine.

For most, anger is usually something thats wrong inside them. It comes some say, from a sense of entitlement. They believe that they have a "right" over this friendship, this boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, child, etc. that justifies the reason they slap, choke, or slam someone.You never have that right. Unless you are truly defending yourself (or your family) and there is no other way out, there is pretty much no reason to be violent toward another human being. May times we try to play things up to make them seem more dangerous than they are so we can justify it. We put fake moral frames around it to make it seem like we are a hero. But we're not. Its just another cowardly act, clothed in another lie.

My son and I were talking about a book on leadership he's reading. He quoted a line from the book "They leave the root but try to set up the branches." If you try to set up hollow branches of fake smiles and laughs around an angry root, its bound to show up eventually.

Find the roots of your anger and face them down. If that means verbally confronting a bully- then do it. But don't allow yourself to become a bully in the process. If you find a bully staring you back in the mirror, take a moment to really think about why you do what you do. Find its root and yank it up.

The only good anger that I have found, is anger over things that affect common justice. If you see someone being bullied, it should anger you and you should do something to stop it. Tell an adult or tell the person doing the bullying that its wrong.

If you see an animal being abused, an elderly person being neglected it should make you mad. You should do something about it. Take action! But action does not have to mean being violent. Anger is normal. But how you express it, is totally up to you. Learn to uproot your anger so you can let it empower you, not destroy you.

Inspired by renowned area rap vets hawking their albums out of car trunks, Banjoko sells his Lyrical Swords series — a collection of essays, interviews, and political ideas related to hip-hop, martial arts, and even chess — mostly hand-to-hand on the streets. For the release of his latest effort, Lyrical Swords Volume II: Westside Rebellion, though, he's forgoing the pavement to visit a place few big-name authors tend to tread — the California prison system. After speaking with Muslim inmates in Vacaville earlier in the month, today the San Jose resident is working the exercise yard at San Quentin. His goal: to educate the public about the importance of black and Latino unity, an issue especially important in light of tumultuous race tensions behind bars in this state.

Life Strategies Summer Series #3: Live Your Words

This morning I got up to brush my teeth and my two year old daughter followed me into the bathroom. She really tries to do everything I do. I got my toothbrush and started brushing. Without even telling her a word she said “I wanna brush daddy”.

I smiled at her, put on her Dora toothpaste and she began to brush her teeth. She walked over to her mother and said “I’m brushing my teeth!” with a giant smile on her face.

It hit me as she returned to the bathroom that if I had not brushed my teeth- my daughter would have never been motivated to do it on her own. I lead by example, so she followed.

Its the same thing with friends or co-workers. If the President of the company stays late, even the janitor will be inspired to stay late. If the President cuts out early and is quick to leave random things to be done by others, so will the janitor.

My wife and I used to coach soccer. Every year we had a great team. But our first year, I made it a point to do the warm-ups with the kids. Every drill, every lap, every push-up, every crunch every shot- I did first. I never asked them to do something I myself could not do.

A lot of other coaches would sit on the sidelines with their fat belly hanging over their sweats demanding perfection they themselves could not deliver. It showed when game time arrived.

When I share a move in jiu-jitsu, I only show moves I know I can do. If I show a move that does not work for me, I tell the student “Some people do this move all the time, but it has never worked for me. It may work for you, so I want you to see it and try it.”

You can’t just talk about leading, BE in the front of the pack!

In chess its the same thing. I don’t tell people to do stuff from positions I’m not familiar with or simply not good at. Don’t be afraid to say what you don’t know. It’s actually a hallmark of leadership- not a weakness.

I tell people to live healthy, but man, I love sugar. I always try to eat good. But, sometimes I slip up and go heavy on the cookies. Slipping is human. But more than anything, work to be the most consistent person you can be when it comes to strengthening your mind, your body and your spirit. If you don’t lead from the front, nobody else will…

When I arrived at Texas Tech today I got to watch Dyhemia Young interacting with her host of new friends. While there are definitely more experienced players here, Dyhemia is lighting this place up with her personality and determination.

While some girls are taking the psych-out approach, posturing about winning Dyhemia looks at them and in a sharp tone answers back, well I know how I
'm gonna do!" A girl answers back expecting a fight and Dyhemia looks straight at her and said, "I'm gonna LOSE!"

A gasp went around the room as all the girls fell silent.

"That's right, L-O-S-E. Because I'd rather expect the worst and get the best and be surprised by what I can do."

The room held its breath waiting to see what would happen next, but the other girl smiled, shrugged and said, "Good point."

Mind game over and back to the 64.

HHCF Teaches Anti-bullying Classes and Life Strategies with Chess and Hip-Hop

June 25th 2011, Fremont, CA- The Hip-Hop Chess Federation (HHCF) is proud to announce its Founder and Directors will be hosting Live the Game classes. The six week course will focus on teaching youth the connections between chess, life strategies and staying focused on their personal goals and dealing with various aspects of bullying. They will also be given an outline of self defense Bullyproof basics.

“The culture of bullying in America has spun out of control and Live the Game is our response” stated Adisa Banjoko, founder of the HHCF. “Kids from K-12 will first be given a foundation to believe in their ability to make sound decisions through chess. By fusing chess strategies with the best examples of positive rap lyrics in Slick Ricks “A Children’s Story” or Nas “I Know I Can” we will talk about the importance of self discipline, non-violence and a serious work ethic. Each class will conclude observing various verbal and physical cues that are associated with bullying and options on how to de-escalate the situation and stay safe.”

Live the Game classes will begin August 9th 2011 in conjunction with RAW Talents Group at 37428 Centralmont Place in Fremont, CA. The six week course will meet every Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Each enrolled kid will be given a copy of chess icon Josh Waitzkin’s The Art of Learning to study. The final class will have a graduation ceremony where each student will get a certificate of completion.

Open Letter to President Obama about our Chess Cinderella

Dear Mr. President,

When people think about America’s “systems” particularly social services and police, they often have nothing but bitter words. My experience over the past month, as Adisa Banjoko and I searched for Hip-Hop CHess Federation Player Dyhemia Young to give her the news that she was selected to compete in this chess tournament, has renewed my faith in American government, civil servants and law enforcement.

Please, Mr. President, take some time to recognize San Francisco Police Detective Joseph Carroll, social workers Pamela Connie and Sheila George and all the other public servants who worked for the past month to find this girl and give her a shot at her dream. Even the San Francisco City Attorney helped us get her through acres of red tape to allow this foster child to compete in the chess tournament in Texas this coming week and have a shot at a college scholarship and a better experience.

The story below only scratches the surface of this epic which is still unfolding the path to a better life for this young girl.

When Dyhemia Young was invited to compete in a prestigious all-girls chess tournament, at first it looked like the biggest hurdle would be raising the money to get her there.

The Susan Polgar Girls' Invitational takes place each year at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and the price tag for flights and accommodations was around $1,600 — a hefty sum for a 16-year-old from San Francisco's hard-knock Bayview District.

The top-rated girl from each state is invited to the annual event. Polgar, the first woman to earn the title of grandmaster, also issues two "wild card" invitations to gifted players who haven't cracked into official competition. It's a world some liken to preparing for the Olympics, with its need for money, lessons and dedicated parents.

But when Adisa Banjoko, founder of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation and Dyhemia's mentor, tried to call her in mid-June to tell her the good news, he realized the money would probably be a lot easier to find than the chess player.

Dyhemia, the very definition of wild card, had disappeared.

None of the phone numbers Banjoko had for her worked anymore, and he hadn't seen her since school let out. No one at John O'Connell High School, where he is a security guard and Dyhemia was a student, had seen the striking junior with the almond eyes, bright smile and sharp mind.

"I reached out to other kids who had gone to O'Connell on Facebook," he recounted. "I figured between Facebook and people who worked there, if that's not going to pull it off, that's bad."

Banjoko describes his protege as "a really good girl with a tumultuous home life. She's a very delicate plant in very harsh weather conditions. It's not whether or not she's a good flower. It's 'are we going to get the conditions right to help her bloom?' So far we haven't."

Dyhemia has played chess on and off since fifth grade, when her social studies teacher taught her how to navigate the 64 squares. She played for a year with Banjoko and the Hip-Hop Chess Federation in ninth grade, and he was struck by her skill. Last year, though, she began to back off.

The federation melds music, martial arts and the game of kings to teach young people the skills to help them through their difficult lives — traits like patience, planning, thinking ahead. Banjoko runs the West Coast operations; Lisa Suhay, a children's book author from Norfolk, Va., leads the East Coast effort.

With Dyhemia scarce and time running out, Suhay hit the computer. A Google search of the girl's name went nowhere, but a check of Google images June 24 gave Suhay and Banjoko their first lead: a missing person's poster from 2008.

"Missing Juvenile," its headline blared, above black-and-white photos of a wistful 13-year-old. "LSW: Blue jeans, possibly with a red jacket. Hair is in a pony tail." And finally, a phone number for the San Francisco Police Department.

Suhay emailed the poster to Banjoko. "Missing persons on her from '08," she wrote. "This our girl?"

The answer was yes.

Suhay dialed the number and was transferred to Det. Joseph Carroll, with the missing person's unit. "I'm going to make the strangest request you are going to get all week," she told him. A half hour later, he called back. "I've got a line on her," Carroll said. But it would take nearly a month for them to connect.

Dyhemia has been in and out of the foster care system for the last three years. Recently, it turned out, she had done a brief stint in juvenile hall — officials will not disclose why — before being sent to the East Palo Alto Teen Home on June 30. That's where Carroll tracked her down last week.

Three other girls, two with babies, live in the split-level, Band-Aid-colored house under the care of executive director Sheila George, who answered the phone last weekend when Dyhemia's social worker called with news of the invitation.

"Ms. George said, 'You that good at chess?'" Dyhemia recounted. "I said, 'I'll go and do my best and have fun.' "

She hasn't played regularly for a year and is nervous about Lubbock.

"I had to focus on my studies," she said. "I messed up in school in ninth-grade year. I had a lot going on in my home situation. But every time Adisa cracked open a board at the library, I wanted to play.

"Chess," she said, "kept me going. It kept me motivated and kept me trying."

Banjoko and Suhay are getting close to raising the funds for Dyhemia's trip, which has doubled in cost because state law requires that she travel with a chaperone. But they're not quite there. The cost of the plane tickets is being covered by FedEx Corp.; Jupiter Jiu Jitsu, a martial arts tournament company; and Los Angeles rapper Rakaa Iriscience.

Dyhemia and George are scheduled to get on the plane Sunday.

The opportunity to play chess with the best girls in the country came as a shock, Dyhemia said. But the biggest surprise was how much effort went into finding her and getting her to Lubbock.

"This is crazy," she said. "That lets me know I'm loved."

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA -- Tonight Rener Gracie, co-creator of the national Bullyproof and Women Empowered programs paused the Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar he was teaching at Norfolk Karate Academy here to offer some words of encouragement to a young HHCF player, Dyhemia Young.

Young, 16, recieved an invitation from Grand Master Susan Polgar to attend the 8th Annual Susan Polgar Girls' Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, July 24th. However, Young is currently in the San Francisco foster care system and in order to get permission to fly her to the tournament and seminar plane tickets for both her and a state appointed guardian ($800 each at this late date), plus room and board ($500 each), have to be raised to give her a chance to both learn and compete.

While some pledges have been made, the full amount has not yet been raised. The clock is ticking.

Fire. If you have a certain kind of heat, a certain kind of oxygen, and a certain kind of physical substance (commonly known as a combustible substance), then you will have made fire. The heat is fueled by the oxygen and once these two elements find a physical place to grow (i.e. the combustible substance), a fire will flourish. Once a fire has been established, the only thing you can do is react to it. You can fight the fire head on, with the hope that you may be able to overpower the flames, or you can deem yourself to be too weak to confront the fire, and retreat.

From every day housefires, to catastrophies such as the Oakland Hills fire of 1991, my Law Of Fire is simple: Once you have the three elements needed for a fire to occur, it will occur. No amount of confidence, arrogance, or “tough talk” will prevent it. One a fire occurs, it will make you run, make you burn, or it will make you die.

However, the beauty of this law, as with all laws of physical science, is that it is not absolute. Let’s take a moment to examine the solution to the Law Of Fire, and how it could be a solution strategy to the ” fire ” that may be burning in your own life.

Since we know that all three elements are needed to create a fire, then we can deduce from this fact , that , if you have anything else other than this equation, a fire cannot happen. You can have a combustible substance and high winds, but if it’s too cold of a temperature in the equation, you will not have a fire. The same goes for a hot day and high winds. If there is nothing worthy of these two elements to feed on, they will starve. You will have no fire . It’s a proven fact, that can only be altered under special circumstances.

Now that you know this, ask yourself: What is the ” fire ” of my life? What out-of-control force is causing me to flee, fight, or run the risk losing the peace of mind that I am striving for?

Only you can answer that.

For example, It may be the ” heat ” of a two-faced associate who finds ” oxygen ” in a rumor or misconception about you and has applies it to the ” combustible substance ” that comes in the form of an online community that is not able to methodically get the facts right. This ” fire ” is called “Character Assassination”. It occurs often in life, and when the damage done, like the fire of nature, Character Assassination can injure and even “kill” the respect and reputation of a person who is unable to fight it’s force.

The solution for the Law Of Fire, and your own personal “fire”, is the still same. Maybe you could engage the online community with the concrete evidence that clears your name, or expose the character of the associate by revealing concrete evidence of thier treachery. You must ask yourself, ” What is my heat, my oxygen, and my combustible substance, and how do I take them away? Whatever you choose, you will be making the equation for a fire stand as incorrect, which equals to no “fire” at all.

The law of fire can also work in your favor. For example, this past March, I ran a 13.5 mile half-marathon to raise awareness for non-violence life strategies through the works of the my sponsor, HHCF, in the 2nd Annual Oakland Running Festival, here in Oakland, Ca. The ” fire ” consisted of ” heat ” from the tenure that I am blessed to have as hip hop artist, mixed with the ” oxygen ” of the global media surge that it produced, and the ” combustible substance” it found in my physical ability to perform the half-marathon sucessfully. Like fire , this produced a uncontrollable swell-force, but instead of the heat from a flame it was a rush of dignity, optimism and redemption for everyone who , like myself, who has struggled with obesity, food addiction, and the mental health issues that are recursive of these two elements.

Whether you are fighting ” fire ” or fire, stay focused on the fact that fire is not a single event. In either context, it as actually three things happening at once. Bring these three things together and watch it happen. Take one of these three things away, and nothing happens at all.

Remember, as I stated earlier, once a fire has started, it has started. Nothing of confidence, arrogance or tough talk can stop it. Likewise, if you can understand and execute the law of fire correctly, there is a great chance that a persons front of confidence, arrogance or tough talk can stop YOU.

To start the Summer off correctly I wanted to talk about the importance of making positive daily actions toward your goals. Having a goal is essential! If you are unsure about what you want to do with your life, that’s ok- everybody goes through those phases. But you must remain in constant search of taking in new experiences and information (never stop reading!) in order to see what your future options. If chess helps you learn one thing in life, its always take time to properly weigh your options.

More than ever, this planet is moving at a tremendous speed with constantly evolving technologies, political systems, social systems and economies. Even the way art is made, distributed, and sold is also in transition. It’s a beautiful time to be alive and there are amazing opportunities to learn from and grow through all around you. But without a clear goal, you might find yourself overwhelmed by it all and before you finish smiling, it’s over. Life really moves that fast.

Part of it is the intensity of the unstable economy and our broken educational system. It can leave you feeling unprepared at best and extremely stressed and depressed at worst. Negative thoughts can be crippling to the mind, body, and spirit. Sometimes negative thoughts are fed to us from our family, friends and the media. Despite meaning well, it’s common that those who love us mislead us. Not from a place of hate, but more often than not, it’s just a transfer of fear that they carried and put onto you.

Regardless of their intention these negative thoughts can invade your head like a virus and alter the normal function of your brain. Your sense of self worth and ability become distorted. Soon your bad habits and negative affirmations lead you to assured failure and unhappiness.

To free yourself of this virus you must first decide that your mind, body, and soul are sacred. The word sacred comes from a Latin root word sacrare mean “to devote”. One of the definitions of sacred is “properly immune from violence, interference etc. as a person”. After you recognize your inherent sacred nature, you quickly understand that anything sacred is worthy of defending. The easiest way to defend yourself against any threat (physical, mental, economic, etc.) is to keep yourself consistently in tune with the true current state of the world. You need to be clear on your place in it and where you are headed.

After many years of living a very distracted life, I recently developed a methodology to combat consistent distractions. I write is as 3PA > 1NT. Meaning three positive actions are greater than one negative thought!

The next time you find your mind idle on the couch or in front of the TV and a negative thought enters your mind you must first get up (if you are lying down, sit up, if you were sitting stand and if you were standing sit). Change your physical posture as you adjust your mind. No thought is stronger than action taken. Now we begin.

Example #1 : If you are worried about the big test, take three positive actions against that fear. Read 3 pages on the subject that were giving you the most trouble. Or you could read one page, look up an article on the subject online and call a mentor to ask a specific question you lack clarity on.

Example #2: If you feel out of shape when you look yourself in the mirror, then right there drop and do ten push ups (or as many as you can do) ten sit ups and ten minutes on the jump rope.

Example #3: If you want a new job, go sign up at 3 new sites online or dig deeper on the sites you prefer and send no less than three resumes out.

Those are the simple examples I can give but the equations are applicable to many more situations. To get started, write 3PA > 1NT in big letters on a piece of binder paper and place it on your favorite mirror, on your fridge, or make it your screen saver. Say the equation and its meaning when you look at it. As you do that, you’ll begin to slowly implement it more and more when obstacles clutter your path.

One of the best things about this method is that you will quickly learn how little effort it takes to take three positive actions. In no time at all you will be taking six, ten and twelve actions to breakthrough to the next level. Using the 3PA > 1NT will give you a much greater sense of peace in your personal, scholastic and professional world. You will sleep better and worry less because you will make taking action your core instinct. In chess playing defense too long is always fatal. At some point you must commit to moving forward or die exhausted from reactive moves dictated by outside forces.

In order to ensure its full impact, you must use the 3PA > 1NT for 21 days straight. Studies show it takes 21 days for a habit to set into your mind. Allow this to become a part of your daily mental regimen and you will be unstoppable in any arena you walk.

It was an incredible day at the HHCF Spring Classic. Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson and many others) came out to share her wisdom and perspective on making good choices in life. Daniel Naroditsky came out with his father Vlad. He hosted a simul (playing many people at one time) and its was so much fun. I don't have a photo of it yet, but Jay Pugao gave an amazing martial arts demo of Eskrima (Filipino stick fighting).

My heart is still soaring from all the positivity of that day. I want to take a moment to especially thank Rahman Jamaal and Hal Bogner for their help in making the event happen. HHCF Jiu Jitsu Team Profile: Purple Belt Bobby Ditona

Bobby Ditona of the HHCF Jiu Jitsu Team is a purple belt under Marc Laimon/Sim Go at Cobra Kai in Las Vegas Nevada. He is also taught the Philipine Merchant Marine Academy with his brother Eugene (who will be interviewed soon) and they both have done a lot to raise money for Philipine typhoon victims. Bobby is as kind off the mat, as his is a savage on the mat. This interview is long over due and I'm happy to share it.

HHCF: Being from the Bay how did you end up at Cobra Kai?

BD: I started Jiu-jitsu at the Ralph Gracie academy in Mountain View while still in college. I eventually transferred to Crosley Gracie's academy who was teaching under Ralph at the time. Vegas was booming in 2001, I had just recently married my wife Michelle and we had a daughter Kamryn and moving to Vegas at that time gave my family and I a bettter opportunity. After moving to Vegas I had quit training. I kept thinking I'll eventually get back but not until 3 years later did I decide to step back into a jiu-jitsu school. There's probably a number of reasons for the long break but kids(had my son Isaiah) and a crazy graveyard shift work schedule were the main ones.

Coming from a successful school like Ralph's I was very picky about where to train. After checking out 4 of the more known BJJ schools in Vegas I decided on making John Lewis's JSECT academy my new gym. I did not know of the recent separation of Marc Laimon and Lewis at the time I started and slowly a lot of the students were leaving JSECT for Laimon's gym. I got my blue under Lewis about a year later and that's when I started contemplating leaving. I already knew of guys like Sim Go, Sonny Nohara, and Jeff Glover at Cobra Kai and thought training and getting taught and beat up by them could only help my game. So I decided to transfer to Cobra Kai and I was right about getting beat up and learning and getting better.

HHCF: You brought Sim Go out to Heroes Martial Arts Academy in San Jose for a seminar to help the Philippines typhoon victims. How did that come about?

BD: I believe it was my brother who came up with the whole idea. And if I can back up a bit I just wanted to say my parents have inspired us to do these kind of things. My father opened up a library under his fathers name at the elementary school where he attended and where my grandfather was a teacher. My mom a retired nurse joined a group of medical professionals and doctors who do medical missions. She has done a couple in the Philippines. Through the company my wife works for Green Valley Med Supply, my mother was able to purchase at a great rate some vitamins and supplements much needed to the sick in the Philippines. That was a big help in the medical mission.

Sim happens to be a very respected grappler, the competition resume speaks for itself and happens to be filipino and the Bay has a lot of Filipinos training and who are down to spend money on something positive like the seminar and my brother knew all this. He put 2 and 2 together and it ended up being a success. It's a huge bonus to us grapplers who attended this seminar that we were able to learn some legit jiu-jitsu techniques on top of donating money to the cause.

We recently visited the area that was hit the hardest from the typhoon which is close to where both of my parents are from in Zambales. It was a humbling experience. To know that through this seminar people got much needed shoes(that were mainly donated by CLAE shoe company), it made it all the more worthwhile. To see the direct positive effect on people is beyond words and truthfully there wasn't much effort on our part. My brother and I are blessed to have friends who care and have something to give. I wish everyone could have seen what we saw in the Philippines during our short time there but for now you will have to take my word for it.

HHCF: What has BJJ given you beyond the skill to defend yourself?

BD: Mainly confidence in myself and that goes a long way. Like I mentioned earlier I stopped training my health wasn't so great, I started up again and my health got better. It's better than medicine. I've always been into sports and competed all my life. I can honestly say I got more injuries the few times I played basketball and football after high school then I've gotten through grappling. It has also given me the opportunity to help others. I have kids and eventually the knowledge that I have can be passed on to them. That's just scratching the surface of what BJJ has done for me.

HHCF: I heard they have a chess scene in the Philippines. Tell me what you saw.

BD: can honestly say I'm not a big chess guy. I'd like to be and now being named to the HHCF jiu-jitsu competition team there's much more inspiration for me to get started. That being said I did not go to the Philippines having chess on my mind but what did happen is it came to me. In America chess doesn't come to you. You have to go search for it. In the Philippines there were chess boards the size of a big living room with the chess pieces the size of Uriah Faber. This was free to use and inside the biggest mall in all of Asia. Pretty amazing. Whats more amazing is during my stay there I saw stolen toilet seats, gates to graves(my own grandfather's was taken), and just about anything gets stolen but what didn't get stolen is anything related to chess. I saw chess boards in numerous public places like hotel lobby's and all of them were intact. They steal toilet seats but no chess pieces. Trip out.

HHCF: What's your favorite memory of teaching in the Philippines?

BD: As probably mentioned earlier or in my brother's interview the seminar with the students of the Phillipine Merchant Marine Academy was great. But my favorite memory is probably training and teaching at the academy ran by Stephen Kamphuis/Team Fabricio KMA. A friend of ours Casey Cruz, who also started out at Mountain View Ralph academy trains there. The students wanted to learn some techniques that I actually use and it was really nice to show people something and see them fall in love with it. It's a great feeling to know you may have helped someone's game progress.

HHCF: What has been your most memorable lesson from competing in Jiu-Jitsu?

BD: There's a bunch. One story I want to share is a match I had with a guy who had already beaten me in a previous Grapplers Quest championship match. He won a tough close match by points and I was very disappointed because I had the chance to win my first gold medal. I never thought I'd get the opportunity to have another go with him but I did about a year and a skill division higher later. The match itself was back and forth and towards the end I was down on points. In my previous semi final match I had felt my big right toe pop out of place but it went right back in, so not too big of a deal. But in this particular match as I was trying to turn the corner on a double leg my same toe got caught in the mat and completely dislocated. I looked down and saw my toe pointing in the other direction away from the other toes. It was so bad the ref (Brian Cimmins-president of the Grapplers Quest) asked if I needed time. Like any true warrior I said yes. LOL. I was in the moment and fortunately was able to pop my toe back in place without too much pain. I ran around looking to tape my big toe to the toe or toe's next to it just to keep it from popping out again. I couldn't find any and the ref and the other guys coaches were making a fuss to start the match back up so I was forced to go on without tape and the possibility of it popping out again(because thats what it felt like would happen). Long story short, I was so pumped up in this match something had taken over me and I used that energy to win the match. Although it wasn't winning the worlds it was the greatest feeling I had of winning and competing than any other match because of the injury and it being a revenge match.

So the lesson here is not giving up. I'm not the toughest dude on the planet but in that moment I was doing it for all the reasons I mentioned as well as my family and my team(competitors know what I mean, all these thoughts can go on in your head in a matter of seconds) and I refused to lose that match. Another thing I want to add since we're on the subject of lessons and Jiu Jitsu is the idea and practice of consistency. Consistency is so important in all of the martial arts. I've been through school, work, kids, more kids, marriage, injuries, and other stuff but I promised myself I'd stay consistent with my training. Consistency for the next "phenom" could be not missing more than 2 days in a week or training 2 times a day M-W-F but My consistency could mean not missing more than 2 whole weeks and staying up to date with my techniques. Either way consistency is important to me because it gives me a way of measuring how I balance out my training along with my hectic work/life schedule.

HHCF: Whats your ultimate goal in BJJ? Is it to teach? Get my black belt? Win a world title?

BD: Not to sell myself short but the black belt isn't the ultimate goal, thats for sure. I try to be realistic and the way I look at it as a purple, I can't see or think of a black belt until I get my brown. I want to continue learning and competing to get to a point where I can teach not only my own family but maybe the students at my own gym possibly. As a purple most guys in the jiu jitsu community may think I'm qualified to teach kids and beginners. I don't. Maybe because I've had instructors through the years like Marc, Sim, Sonny, Glover, Bill Cooper, Chris Holdsworth, just a bunch of studs and champions and it has really humbled me and I've been blessed to have been a student with the likes of these guys. I naturally feel like I need to step my game up to be able to be "qualified" as a solid teacher. As far as winning a world title I guess thats not too far fetched. Let's say I'm a purple for 11 more years and I stay "consistent" but never get promoted to brown and I compete in my age division(over 40 years by then), then yes I can win. LOL. Seriously winning a world title at any division at any weight or age or skill level is a realistic goal. Everyone who competes might as well strive for that.

HHCF: For people who don't see the connections between chess and BJJ what would you tell them?

Since UFC 1 and the Gracie Jiu-jitsu domination of the martial arts we have heard the announcers say, "It's just a chess match." Because of my lack of knowlege of chess I can't speak on it too much but Jiu-jitsu is a thinking game and obviously so is chess. You have to say focused and continue to practice in both games and the better the teacher you have the better chances you have of being successful. If you compete to have fun and have in the back of your mind you will get better from the experience of winning or losing then this is a good example of both games.

As promised, here is another profile of one of the HHCF Jiu Jitsu Team members. His name is Ed Solis. Ed is an army vet, he plays the guitar, he runs the Alum Rock Youth Center in San Jose and is an amazing wrestler and jiu jitsu player. Enough from me. Let me let you hear it from him!

HHCF: Whats your rank, where do you train and how did you learn about jiu jitsu?

Ed Solis: I am a blue belt under Alan “Gumby” Marques. I train at Heroes Martial Arts Academy in San Jose, Ca. I learned about BJJ many years ago from college wrestling team mates who have been practicing for some time. But it was only recently that I finally took the plunge and began my journey.

HHCF: You also do a lot of work with kids in San Jose, CA. Can you talk about that for a moment?

ES: I moved to San Jose in 2000. Before that I was a Director at the Eastside Boys and Girls Club in East LA. As such I wanted to find a job as fulfilling as that in San Jose. I now work in the Department of Parks and Recreation in a underserved, low-income community. I spend most of my time getting youth and teens pointed in the right direction through recreation and referral services. It’s a great job and I am blessed to serve the kids and families of San Jose.

HHCF: Since you work directly with so many young people, can you tell me about what a lot of them are facing, socially and educationally?

ES:Wow there is so much these kids are dealing with. Many of the youth I work directly with are at risk to be recruited by gangs or become victims of gangs. It’s a hard choice for these kids and so many of their parents are working 2-3 jobs and many don’t speak the language. They can’t relate or understand the dangers that their children face daily. This leads to poor performance in school, high drop out rates, incarceration, and for some death. It’s heart breaking. I do my best to work with the educators, police, and non-profits to coordinate resources for our youth. But in these tough fiscal times, it seems like those resources are becoming smaller and smaller.

HHCF:How much do you think chess and martial arts can help them actualize their potential?

ES: I have created 2 jiu-jitsu programs at our centers and I have raised money to bring BJJ to elementary schools. Chess is next. I feel that exposing inter city kids to martial arts and the critical thinking of chess can bring core human needs like belonging, love, fulfillment, competence, and empowerment to them. For so many youth today, access to BJJ and chess are only dreams. When I see youth discover BJJ, I see a change in so many aspects of their personality and outlook on life. I want to expose as many people to the power of jui-jitsu as possible.

HHCF: Since taking on jiu jitsu as part of your life, a lot has changed for you. Tell me about that for a moment?

ES: I walked into my doctor’s office at the age of 41. I got on the scale and I weighed 262 lbs! My blood pressure was high borderline on dangerously high. My health was in serio9us danger. My doctor wanted to start me on 3 medications. I asked her for 6 months to change my lifestyle. I found Heroes Martial Arts on the web. Called up the academy and set up a time to come in. My first 2 weeks were miserable! I was literally getting sick after the warm ups. But in 6 months I lost 30 lbs and brought all of my levels down to normal. In one year I won my first IBJJF world title and earned my blue belt. I tell everyone who will listen, Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It’s my lifestyle! It may have just saved my life.

HHCF: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned about yourself since learning jiu jitsu?

ES: I think the biggest lesson I learned was that the art of learning never ends. It can happen at any age. I am so humbled by the learning process of BJJ. I am journeyman on this amazing quest of knowledge and everyday I can sit next to my instructor Gumby. I can access his knowledge. We talk for hours sometimes. He’s the best teacher I could have asked for. I can grab onto Justin “Machine” Holder another Ralph Gracie black belt and learn from him. We have so many amazing people at all levels at my gym and they are all willing to teach me. White, blue, purple, brown, and black belts are in almost every class at my academy and I smile when I know that I can put on a gi or rashgarud and learn from them.

HHCF: You are also an accomplished guitarist. Talk about some of your biggest musical influences, Hip-Hop and beyond.

ES: My parents were big music buffs! Growing up in a Mexican-American household in the 70’s I was exposed to some amazing and eclectic music. Everything from Sly and the Family Stone, Kiss, Carol King, David Bowie, Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin were on the turntable. My parents were also proud of our heritage so Mariachi and rancheras were in order. I received my first guitar when I was 10 years old and haven’t looked back. I became a big fan of blues in my teens and of course Hip-Hop. During my time in the military many of my fellow soldiers from NY and Chicago really blew up my walkman (like that) with Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Slick Rick and EMPD.

HHCF: You just competed in Las Vegas at he ADCC trials and got s silver medal. Talk about those matches for a moment if you could?

ES: I’m such a big fan of BJJ that it was amazing walking by some of the super stars of the sport. Romulo Barral walked by and shook my hand, I watched Antonio Bragga Neto do his thing. Caio Terra was amazing. Then you have to snap out of it and remember you’re there to do a job. I had a barn burner in the finals against the Absolute No-Gi world champ. I came up short 2-0 but it was a great experience. I learned a couple of good lessons and in the end, that’s not a bad thing.

HHCF: You also took a gold medal at the World Championships. How amazing was that?

ES: It was a defining moment in my life. All the hard work, the pain, the sacrifice pays off when you win. It was extremely satisfying. I also finished 3^rd in the absolute division so I felt very proud. I know you can’t get hung up on titles but I crack up when my wife says, “Hey World Champ, when are you going to submit that lawn mower?”

HHCF: Any last words?

ES: I just want to thank you Adisa for the honor of being a part of this great effort. I’d also like to thank all the super cool member of the Jiu-Jitsu community around the world. My life has become a bit more fulfilling since I discovered BJJ. Of course a big shout out to Gumby and all of my teammates at Heroes! 2011 here we come! Osssssssss

Using the Force to overcome Autism and bullying

On the first day of April, most everyone knew it was Autism Awareness Month. Now it's just tax time, moving toward May flowers. To refocus, it's time for me to tell you about Spencer.

There's a special place in my heart for my new buddy, Spencer, 12, who has Asperger's Syndrome. It's the same Autism Spectrum challenge my son Quin was born with.

Meeting Spencer was one of those accidents fate likes to arrange.

I have been volunteering at an elementary school to help some fifth-grade students doing poorly. The hope is that through the Hip-Hop Chess program and mentoring one day a week, the students will learn how to focus and develop better life strategies.

However, listening to the principal read the weekly litany of issues these students face, I realized that bullying was among the problems. Instead of concentrating on studies, my new charges had focused on picking on others and wreaking havoc. It's a handy distraction from their academic failings and a quick fix for dented egos.

I was there to help the bullies - the very people whose victims I have been mentoring and teaching self-defense.

I was facing a big character test with this. Nobody wants to like or help the perceived bad guy, but we can't just do the easy fixes to make a better world. Too often, in addition to bullying to distract from academic issues, bullies have been victims themselves, and their defense mechanism is to find someone even more bullyable.

Enter Spencer, coke-bottle glasses, emotionally vulnerable, innocent for his age - a prime target. From being relentlessly teased and verbally abused to having his bathroom-stall door kicked and other daily miseries, Spencer's school days had become a challenge.

The principal gave my number to Spencer's grandparents, who are raising him. She told them that my son had been a victim of bullying - until I took all four of my sons to Norfolk Karate Academy for Gracie Bullyproof classes, which I also attend. It worked for Quin, I said, and I promised to be there, on the mat, with Spencer for every class if they decided to give it a try.

A week later I stood in the doorway of the dojo with Spencer clinging to my sleeve and weeping with fear at the notion of entering this new, loud environment. He was also not pleased at all with having to wear the traditional white uniform (Gi) and going barefoot.

It was his 12th birthday, and his grandma had mentioned he loved the Star Wars "Happy Birthday Jedi" button his grandpa had given him. Inspiration cut through the barrier like a light sabre. "Spencer, you look like a total Jedi in that outfit!" I told him. "All these people are here to train and defend against the Dark Side." BING! Tears gone.

Acting as a human shield in a Sith attack, I walked Spencer into the dojo. Socks still on, but you can't win the Star Wars without a few battles.

It was rough going at first, but inch by scary inch, across the mat and out to the group we went. The instructors and other students welcomed Spencer like another battle-scarred veteran of the Clique Wars. He made friends, tried all the moves and even learned to take down a bully. By the end of the second class he was joining in to play dodge ball with bean bags and landing a black belt opponent on his keister during drills. He learned "Talk, Tell and Tackle" (verbally first and physically as a last resort).

By the third class, he barely needed me on the mat and bravely rolled with the biggest, most fearsome-looking instructor in the place, Shawn Perez. Shawn's a big teddy bear, if teddy bears are made of cinderblocks.

Two weeks into his training I asked Spencer how it was going at school. He looked right at me (a big thing for Asperger's kids) and said, "I have not been bullied at all since I started here. I think it's the confidence."

I think so, too.

This is Spencer's 4th Gracie Bullyproof session at Norfolk Karate Academy.

HHCF is mentoring both former victim (Spencer, 12, who has Asperger's) and his former bully, to play chess. They are both learning new Life Strategies.
As true tacticians we must address bullying from multiple angles.
Special thanks to GJJ Instructors Lee Tevan, Jenn Taylor and Shawn Perez for going the extra miles to adjust teaching methods for a special needs child.

T-Kash After Finishing 1/2 Marathon @ Oakland Running Festival

This weekend I got to watch T-KASH run at the Oakland Running Festival. He was sponsored by the HHCF and he ran for the cause of non-violence. Just a few yeara go, T-KASH ran the streets looking for something shady to get into. Now he runs those same streets looking to bring light to the youth. Even if you don't like Hip-Hop or you hate Rap music- you have to respect this man and his mission.

He is not wearing a foil cape. That keeps runners warm after they finish running!

HHCF Literacy & Chess connect on eReaders that we are putting into the hands of mentors and at-risk kids during our after school and intervevtion programs.

East coast HHCF organizer Lisa Suhay is working with Project Light, a worldwide literacy organization, to mentor at-risk children by providing them with eReading devices pre-loaded with chess programs, music, plus books and graphic novels on life strategies. This is the pilot for what will become a national HHCF eReaders project.

Kids can listen to music while playing chess on their eReaders and then read books and magazines on the eReaders too.

BREAKING NEWS ON NBC 11: HHCF Sponsors Rapper T-Kash As He Runs for Non-violence in Oakland

Oakland rapper T-Kash has already dropped hit songs. Recently, though, he dropped something even more impressive: 100 pounds.

His credentials are solid: After backing East Bay rapper The Coup on the album "Steal This Album," T-Kash went solo, putting out "Turf War Syndrome," and then his newest release, "Brains All Over The Streets." He's known in the hip-hop community for his raw lyrics, and respected for his non-commercial style.

But there's more. Now, T-Kash is hitting the road, literally, spreading the word about physical fitness. Having dropped a cool 100 pounds through his fitness regimen, he's gearing up to run the half marathon at the Oakland Running Festival - and he's even got a sponsor, the Hip-Hop Chess Federation.

HHCF, also based in the Bay Area, is known for stressing chess and fitness over violence. The group, headed by local product Adisa Banjoko, takes its boards to local schools to show how playing chess can actually be cool. Especially when you consider some of the alternative paths. Banjoko says T-Kash has helped the group in the past, "working on the front lines as a peacemaker wherever he walked." And, says Banjoko, "I watched him lose 100 pounds!"

Hip-Hop Chess Federation on Allhiphop.com! May 14th Event Announced!!

(AllHipHop News) A variety of popular Hip-Hop artists are teaming with the Hip-Hop Chess Federation for the HHCF Spring Classic, which promotes peace, and anti-bullying at the all-ages event.

Casual from Hieroglyphics, Zion I, T-Kash, pro-skater Jordan Richter and others will be special guests at the chess tournament, which will also host a Life Strategies panel prior to the start of the Chess matches.

“Rappers, skaters and chess players from all over are coming together once again to help the streets gain peace” said HHCF founder Adisa Banjoko. “The economy has been tough on our organization in recent years. That’s why I’m thankful to everybody involved in making this event happen. Gang violence, bullying, alcohol and drug abuse among young people is still a very real problem. We want to show them the benefits of reinforcing their dreams with serious focus and a consistent work ethic.”

Jordan Richter will also give a skate exhibition while teaching teens about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, the All Tribes Universal Zulu Nation will host a B-Boying workshop for young buys and girls.

Members of the HHCF Jiu Jitsu teams will close out the day with tactics and exhibition matches, in addition to a discussion about bullying.

The HHCF's Spring Classic takes place on May 14th at the Alum Rock Youth Center in San Jose, California.

Spike & Schultz Sign-on in Norfolk

Director Spike Lee was in Norfolk, Virginia with MSNBC's Ed Schultz whis is Norfolk native, filming promotional spots at Dumar's Ice Cream and met up with HHCF East Coast Operations Director Lisa Suhay on set during a break.

Mr. Lee was filming spots for Lean Forward MSNBC with Ed Schultz. In a meeting arranged by MSNBC, Mr. Lee took the time to learn about HHCF from Suhay and expressed his support by signing two chess boards for our Norfolk school programs.

Mr. Schultz also took time out of his busy shooting schedule to sign boards for our school programs.

Kids will be playing on the boards at Kids in the Kingdom after school program in Park Place and at Larchmont Elementary School, where HHCF has been brought in by the Superintendent of Schools, Richard Bentley and Principal Melisi to try and provide a bridge for students who are in the fail-zone. Every Friday morning Suhay will meet with six students who, if they cannot be given better Life Strategies, will not be promoted to middle school in June.

These are big challenges and HHCF deeply appreciates the celebrity support of both Spike Lee and Ed Schultz as well as that of MSNBC which helped arrange the meetings between Suhay and Mr. Lee.
